About Us
Master Shiro Asano: 10th Dan
We proudly follow the legacy of the late Shiro Asano Hanshi, 10th Dan, former Chief Instructor of the Shotokan Karate International European Federation. A world-renowned master of Shotokan Karate, Asano Hanshi played a pivotal role in establishing and developing authentic Shotokan Karate across Europe and Great Britain.
Born in Tokyo in 1939, Asano Hanshi began his Karate training at an early age under the legendary Masatoshi Nakayama, who later became Head Instructor of the Japan Karate Association (JKA).
Like many of the leading Shotokan instructors of his generation, he was a graduate of the prestigious Takushoku University, an institution famous for producing exceptional martial artists, particularly in Karate. Training there was extremely demanding, often lasting up to six hours per day and instilling the discipline, technical precision, and spirit that defined his Karate.
Renowned for his exceptional kumite (sparring) ability, Asano Hanshi demonstrated his skill and determination by becoming All Japan Champion twice. Following his graduation, he enrolled in the Japan Karate Association’s elite Instructor Training Programme and was officially appointed a JKA Instructor on 1st April 1963.
He taught extensively in Japan and across Europe before being invited to Great Britain in 1968, where he became one of the pioneering instructors responsible for introducing and developing traditional Shotokan Karate in the country. His mission was clear: to teach authentic Shotokan Karate to the highest possible standard, preserving its technical excellence and traditional values.
Asano Hanshi later became Chief Instructor of the Shotokan Karate International European Federation, where his teaching, leadership, and technical expertise influenced generations of students and instructors. His instruction was highly respected and sought after, and his legacy continues to shape our Karate today.
Through his teachings, we continue to uphold the principles of discipline, respect, technical excellence, and lifelong dedication to the art of Shotokan Karate.
